Finland has somewhere between 2.7 and 3.2 million saunas for 5.5 million people, which works out to roughly one per household and makes the sauna less a facility than a fact of national life. Helsinki gets the attention, and its waterfront design saunas deserve it, but the best sauna in Finland is almost never in…
Most people’s first real sauna is an accident of geography, a hotel amenity, or a gym afterthought. A sauna trip is the opposite: you go somewhere specifically to sit in heat the way locals have for centuries, and it recalibrates your whole sense of what the practice can be. After you’ve felt löyly (the burst…
The oldest hammam in this guide has been taking customers since 1584. It has outlasted the Ottoman Empire, two world wars, and every guidebook ever printed about it. You can walk in tomorrow morning at six, pay €57 ($65), and wash yourself under a dome designed by the architect who built half of imperial Istanbul….
Germany runs the largest sauna culture in the world outside Finland, and it does it at a scale that would make a Finn blink. The country’s Saunalandschaft (sauna landscape, meaning a spa complex with many themed saunas rather than a single room) is a genre unto itself: 20 or 30 heat rooms under one roof,…
A weekday seat in a wood-fired barrel sauna parked on a Seattle beach costs $35. A day pass to the largest Korean spa in Los Angeles costs $40, and the building never closes. A single admission to the old bathhouse on East 10th Street in Manhattan costs $60, and which shift you walk into determines…
Tampere heats close to 70 public saunas across the region year-round, and one of them has been in continuous use since 1906. That one – Rajaportti, in the old working-class district of Pispala – is the reason this city belongs on any sauna itinerary. It is not a restored attraction with an entry queue and…
The biggest sauna event in the world is a theatrical competition in Germany where grown adults swing towels to choreographed music and lighting cues. The best one is a Finnish lakeside afternoon where about 200 people pay €25 ($28) to sit in boat saunas next to a medieval castle. Those two facts tell you most…
The cheapest great sauna in Lapland costs €13 ($15). The most expensive bed above one costs €2,000 ($2,300) a night. Both are within a few hours’ drive of each other, both put you under the same aurora, and only one of them requires booking six months ahead. That spread is the whole planning problem in…
Sweden’s best sauna experience costs nothing. The public sauna at Jubileumsparken in Gothenburg – an award-winning piece of architecture on the Göta River harbourfront, seating up to 25 people, with a saltwater pool next door – is free. You just have to book it in advance. That tells you something about how Sweden treats bathing…
