There are really only two questions that matter when you sort out sauna types: does it heat the air or heat your body, and can you throw water on the stones? Everything else – barrel versus rectangular, indoor versus outdoor, wood versus electric – is a variation on those two axes. Get them straight and…
A hot tub at 40°C (104°F) puts more heat into your body than a sauna at 80°C (176°F). That sounds backwards until you remember that water moves heat about 24 times faster than air, and that underwater you can’t cool yourself by sweating. Water wins the physics. It does not automatically win the decision. The…
Finland has roughly 508,000 summer cottages for 5.5 million people, and nearly every one of them comes with a sauna at the water’s edge. That pairing is so automatic that when a Finn buys a lakeside cottage, the sauna isn’t a feature they weigh against others. It’s assumed, like a roof. A cabin sauna isn’t…
A steam room and a sauna are not two versions of the same thing. One runs at 40-50°C (104-122°F) with the air fully saturated at nearly 100% humidity; the other runs at 80-100°C (176-212°F) with the air bone-dry at 5-20%. They are built from different materials, powered by different equipment, and they do different things…
A wood-fired sauna is the closest most people will ever get to the original Finnish thing: fire, stone, steam, cold water, and no electricity anywhere in the equation. When Finnish sauna culture was inscribed on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2020, the tradition it honored was built on wood-fired practice –…
A sauna blanket is an infrared heating blanket with a better marketing budget. You lie inside a padded, sleeping-bag-style envelope lined with far-infrared elements, your head sticks out the top breathing normal room air, and after 30 to 60 minutes you sweat. That’s the honest version. There’s no steam, no hot room, no wooden bench,…
These two things share a name and almost nothing else. A traditional sauna heats a mass of stones until the air itself becomes the experience; an infrared cabin skips the air and warms your body directly with radiant panels. One produces steam you can control by the ladleful; the other physically cannot. Calling both “saunas”…
